Clean transport

Electric vehicles in India

Electric mobility is a core pillar of India’s cleaner transport strategy — cutting urban air pollution, reducing oil import dependence, and supporting climate goals. India is among the world’s fastest-growing EV markets in absolute unit terms for two- and three-wheelers, while four-wheeler electrification still trails leaders such as China, Europe, and Norway.

India snapshot

India’s EV push combines demand incentives, manufacturing support for cells and vehicles, and public charging deployment. Two- and three-wheelers dominate volumes; passenger EVs and e-buses are growing but remain a smaller share of the total vehicle parc.

FAME / successor demand incentives

Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) and follow-on schemes have subsidised eligible EVs and charging to kick-start demand, especially in mass-market segments.

Production-linked incentives aim to localise cell manufacturing and reduce reliance on imported battery packs over time.

Source

Charging infrastructure programmes

Central and state efforts support public charging corridors, city networks, and standards — critical for four-wheeler and fleet adoption.

Source

Electric two-wheelers

Largest volume segment; cost of ownership can already compete with petrol scooters on high daily km with home charging.

Electric three-wheelers

Strong uptake in last-mile passenger and cargo use in many cities; important for urban air quality.

Passenger cars (4W)

Growing model choice and price competition, but BEV share of new car sales remains well below China/EU/Norway.

Buses & fleets

City e-bus tenders and corporate fleets are scaling where depot charging is planned with the grid.

Challenges for India

  • Upfront vehicle price vs petrol/CNG alternatives for many households
  • Charging access for apartment dwellers and long-distance travel
  • Battery import dependence and critical mineral supply chains
  • Grid capacity and tariff design for high night-time charging loads
  • Resale value, battery health transparency, and service networks in smaller towns
